Julia is a single mother, works as a telephone operator and has as a hobby, attending every Wednesday the Colonia Salon to dance danzón. Part of her enthusiasm for not missing her weekly dates is getting out of the routine, as well as seeing her partner, Carmelo, with whom she has won several dance contests. One fine day, the man suddenly disappears when he is suspected of robbery, which is why the protagonist sets out on a trip to Veracruz, a meeting point for the best dancers, where she hopes to find him. In this place, she meets new friends who help her in the search for her: transvestites, prostitutes and other characters make her discover another facet of herself.
